WATCH: Join the Fight Against Cancer by Joining Relay For Life at UC

The 11th annual Relay For Life at UC – the largest student-organized community service event on campus –

will get underway at 6 p.m., Friday, April 5, on McMicken Commons.

The “Sports-of-All-Sorts”-themed event will end at noon, Saturday, April 6, with an announcement of the fundraising total to benefit the American Cancer Society.

UC students hope to recruit 170 teams and 2,100 volunteers to raise $180,000 to support American Cancer Society education, advocacy and research programs, including American Cancer Society-funded research at UC.  “We’re also hoping to recruit 75 cancer survivors and caregivers to start the relay with the Victory Lap,” says UC event chairperson Megan Kelley, a fourth-year accounting major from Mason, Ohio.

Last year’s relay raised $156,000, allowing student organizers to achieve their $1 million goal of fundraising over the past decade.

Relay For Life at UC is the largest collegiate relay in its division, which includes Ohio and Pennsylvania.  Kelley says that UC is currently ranked 16th in the nation as the largest collegiate Relay For Life fundraiser. “Our goal is to make the top 10,” says Kelley.

In 2012, UC also received the Leader of Hope Award from the American Cancer Society, meaning that UC met the high qualifications of being designated as an outstanding Relay For Life site.

The event will feature entertainment and appearances from Lucy the Bearcat and Who Dey, the Bengals mascot.

Student organizers of Relay For Life at UC include Kelley; Andrew Davis, a third-year biological sciences major; Lindsay Larkey, a fourth-year mechanical engineering major; and Sean Lawson, a third-year biology/chemistry major.
