VIDEO: UC Students Jump into Tanzanian Culture to Tell a Community's Story
As part of the ongoing courses, "Honors Seminar: Documentary Studies in Tanzania" led by Elissa Yancey, educator associate professor of journalism, and "Humanitarianism: Design Thinking Across the Disciplines" led by Michael Zaretsky, associate professor in the School of Architecture and Interior Design, students from four University of Cincinnati colleges are just back from Tanzania.
The first course led by Yancey is focusing on the fundamental skills and tools of journalism - such as research, interviewing, story construction and multimedia skills - while also studying a specific culture. The second course led by Zaretsky focuses upon social, cultural and technological issues inherent in the field of humanitarian design.
The joint focus on Tanzania builds upon long-standing relationships UC has with the community of Roche, Tanzania, thanks to efforts by UC
and students in the area, which include
a much-needed medical clinic and aiding the
there.
Students from the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences; the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning; the College of Engineering & Applied Science; and the College of Education, Criminal Justice & Human Services were represented among the students who most recently traveled to Tanzania as part of the Honors offerings.

In 1960, as a young and eager statistician, Joan Reisch graduated from UC’s College of Arts and Sciences, and pursued a career in Texas at the Southwestern Medical Center where she’s held numerous roles as both faculty and staff. This year, Reisch was recognized for her career accomplishments and contributions with the Philanthropist of the Year Award by UC’s Alumni Association. This award is given to an alumnus who has been highly engaged in philanthropic activities with A&S, or has made a significant impact on the college.
