UC Professor Receives Technical Communication Publication Award

McMicken College of Arts and Sciences associate professor of professional writing Lisa Meloncon received the 2013 Frank R. Smith Outstanding Journal Article Award for an article she wrote titled “Current State of U.S. Undergraduate Degree Programs in Technical and Professional Communication” that appeared in the journal Technical Communication.

The award was given to UC's Meloncon from the Society for Technical Communication (STC). The STC established the Outstanding Article Award to encourage authors to publish high-quality articles in Technical Communication. The award was created in memory of Frank Smith, a previous editor of Technical Communication who made the journal a leading publication of STC and the profession.

Meloncon co-wrote the article with Sally Henschel, an assistant professor of English at Midwestern State University. The judging committee’s citation says that these authors deserved the award: “For their in-depth, critical review of 65 programs in technical and professional communication in the United States. Their analysis of trends between 2005 and 2011 uses a methodology that makes it easy to replicate their study.”

Their achievement will be announced in the May issue of Technical Communication.
