UC Physics Professor Awarded Research Grant from National Consortium

University of Cincinnati assistant professor of physics Dr. Alexandre Sousa is one of 35 recipients of the

2014 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards

, distributed by

Oak Ridge Associated Universities

. Dr. Sousa will receive a grant of $5,000 from ORAU in order to further fund his research. As part of the award, the University of Cincinnati will provide a matching grant.

Dr. Sousa’s research focuses on the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations. He is currently working on a prototype neutrino detector for the

Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment

project, based out of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. The LBNE project is a top priority in the recently released

U.S. High Energy Physics Strategy Report

, which acts as a roadmap for the U.S. High Energy Physics program over the coming decades.

Sousa is the second UC researcher in as many years to receive this honor. Geology and anthropology professor Brooke Crowley received the same award in 2013.
