'Mountains + Valleys' Featured in Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont
Explore the beautiful landmarks out West through a display of photographs with dimension and depth by artist Millee Tibbs. The artists series Mountains + Valleys is on display in the Park National Bank Art Gallery at UC Clermont College from January 6 27.
Tibbs is an artist currently residing in Detroit, MI. Tibbs holds a Master of Fine Arts in photography from Rhode Island School of Design and she currently teaches at Wayne State University in the Department of Art & Art History. Tibbs is interested in surfaces and their relationship to what lies beneath the discrepancy between what we see and what we know.
Tibbs explains that Mountains + Valleys uses the landscape of the American West as a starting point to interpret and confront cultural myths surrounding our relationship to the landscape. Titled for the two primary folds in Origami, the work uses physical alteration to create relationships between formal geometries and natural spaces that question the illusionistic representation of the photographic image. I print these images, fold them, and then re-photograph them. The resulting images have a duality of being simultaneously manipulated and photographically real. The geometric impositions onto the photo-object literally impress an aesthetic ideal onto the landscape, scarring the very thing they attempt to augment and interrupting the fantasy of an untouched and untouchable vista, said Tibbs.
The Park National Bank Art Gallery is located in the Snyder building on the UC Clermont College campus in Batavia at 4200 Clermont College Drive. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. 5 p.m., the gallery is closed weekends.
