UC s HEMI Program to Host Fifth Annual Kentucky Derby Celebration
Join the Higher Education Mentoring Initiative (HEMI) on May 2 for its 5th Annual Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby fundraising event hosted by Hamilton County Commissioner Greg Hartmann, with generous support from the Peterloon Estate. Watch the iconic race in the company of friends of the University of Cincinnati and the HEMI program those who recognize and support the important role that HEMI plays in helping area foster youth achieve the possibilities of a higher education. The HEMI Program is a partnership between the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners, UCs Partnership for Achieving School Success (PASS), Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Mount St. Joseph University, Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development, and Hamilton County Job and Family Services. HEMI is located within the PASS Center at the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services at UC.
The event will take place at the Peterloon Estate at 8605 Hopewell Road in Cincinnati from 4:30 7:30 p.m. with the proceeds benefiting Hamilton County foster youth, like Mariah Maxwell, a UC HEMI student who graduated from the university in April 2013 and beat national odds after spending nearly nine years in the foster care system. Support of the HEMI program helps students like Mariah receive scholarships and long-term academic mentoring to serve as a support network and to encourage their pursuit of higher education while emancipating from the foster care system.
The fundraising event not only benefits a worthy cause in Greater Cincinnati, but also offers a special way to experience the Kentucky Derby, complete with catered food and drinks. Derby attire is encouraged and worn by many guests, reflecting the spirit of the race and event. A silent auction and raffles will also add to the fun.
The event is open to the entire university and general public, and the Derby will be televised for all to watch. Register here to attend the party. Admission costs are $40 per person or $75 per couple. Net proceeds provide Hamilton County foster youth with scholarships they need to pursue post-secondary education.
