UC's DAAP Hosts Mayors Institute on City Design
The University of Cincinnati School of Planning hosted seven mayors from cities in Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and New Jersey as part of the two-and-a-half day intensive East Regional session of the Mayors Institute on City Design Oct. 14-16. Aimed at addressing some of the most pressing issues in city design, the group met with Cincinnatis experts in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, real-estate economics, transportation planning and urban design.
The
works to transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities. This years session in Cincinnati focused on challenges such as downtown and waterfront development, historic preservation, cultural revitalization, site remediation and the intricacies of design implementation.
Organized and moderated by UC School of Planning assistant professors Leah Hollstein and Conrad Kickert, the MICD group toured some of Cincinnatis most high-profile urban design projects including Washington Park and Music Hall, The Banks and the citys riverfront parks. The sessions working meetings were held at the historic University Club of Cincinnati and the mayors gathered feedback from local, regional and national experts, including Mahyar Arefi, associate professor of urban planning and design at UC and ikas Mehta, associate professor of urbanism at UC.
The mayors participating in the session included: Mayor Ruben Bermudez of Vineland, N.J.; Mayor Wilda Diaz of Perth Amboy, N.J.; Mayor Stephen Gawron of Muskegon, Mich.; Mayor Kyle Moore of Quincy, Ill.; Mayor Wayne Motley of Waukegan, Ill.; Mayor Tom Prather of Georgetown, Ky.; and Mayor Dr. Deirdre Waterman of Pontiac, Mich.

The Mayors Institute on City Design is a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative in partnership with the American Architectural Foundation and the United States Conference of Mayors.
