James Mack Named New Associate Dean of UC's Graduate School

CINCINNATI- The University of Cincinnati Office of the Provost announced today the appointment of James Mack as the new associate dean to the Graduate School.

Mack will begin his new position on June 15. A tenured associate professor of chemistry, Mack served as the assistant chair for the department since the fall of 2013 and has previously filled the role of graduate program director of advising for the same department.

“James is the ideal person to help the Graduate School shape and pursue strategic objectives,” said Beverly Davenport, UC senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost. “In addition to a fantastic set of talents that will support him in this position, he remains a great partner for our faculty and students because of his deep service and broad involvement at UC.”

In his 13 years teaching chemistry, Mack has graduated 11 postgraduate students and is currently advising another eight. Some of these students have assisted him with his nationally and internationally recognized research, which has been broadcast on NPR and featured in the top journals of the chemistry field.

In Mack’s new role he will provide strategic direction over the necessary processes of the UC Graduate School, which support its many students, faculty, programs and staff.

“James joins a leadership team that oversees 11,000 students obtaining advanced degrees,” said Vice Provost and Graduate School Dean Marshall Montrose, regarding Mack’s new position. “The group of students is the ultimate draw for such a position, since they offer the chance to learn about, and advance the goals, of an amazing array of scholarship and research. I know James finds this as irresistible as I do.”

Mack will be splitting his time between the UC Graduate School and his home department of chemistry in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, where he will continue his research and scholarship.
