Take away: While Tony Perzigian (former provost and professor emeritus) and other former colleagues certify that Pinto's accomplishments are impressive, they say that two things are more central to who the new president is and how he leads: He listens and makes time for the people in his life.

Take away: Being named UCs 30th president was something of a homecoming for Pinto as he served as a faculty member in the department of chemical engineering at UC for 26 years.

Take away: He's a 26-year veteran of the University of Cincinnati where he served as vice provost and dean of the graduate school from 2006-2011.He was also the interim associate university dean of the graduate school from 2005-2006, assistant dean for graduate studies at the College of Engineering from 2002-2006, Chemical Engineering Department head from 1993-1997 and professor of chemical engineering from 1985-2011.

Take away: Neville Pinto said he's proud of UC's diversity. "As I begin my first day, my commitment to you is simple: to be guided by the wisdom of this diverse, dynamic and highly accomplished community. My first priority, then, is to listen and learn. I want to engage with as many of you as possible. It will be your ideas and aspirations that will frame our vision and fuel our priorities," Pinto wrote in an email to UC students and staff on Monday.

Take away: I need to listen to folks across campus (and) from that, figure out what is the collective priority to move forward. That will be my task for the next few months. In fact, I sent out a letter to the UC community yesterday, Pinto said.

Take away: "It's again about advancing our mission as a university. One of our missions is to educate our populace.... It's really finding an enrollment that is optimal in delivering our mission at the highest possible quality... . I see everything as opportunities... . It's about the excitement and the privilege of being in...higher education and all it's discovering."

Take away: "I also need to listen to folks across campus, and from that, figure out what is the collective priority to move forward."

Take away: Dr. Pinto held a press conference for the media ahead of his address. "This is a university on the move. It's a university that is student-centered, it's driven by our faculty. It is very proud to be located in the city of Cincinnati. It's a global university but definitely with a heart in this region and in this city and that connection is very real."

Take away: "It's about connecting with all of the talent that's on campus and all of the stakeholders that we have off campus.... The most important thing for me is to listen, to learn and then to come to some conclusions in what I believe are the highest priorities."

My wife is a UC alum. I began my faculty career here in 1985. Our three children were born here. Our dearest friends never left here. Our eldest son is such a Bearcats loyalist that his Kentucky classmates nicknamed him UC, to his utter delight... . Since my appointment at UC was announced, honestly, I have lost count of how many people have asked if I plan to stay in Cincinnati for the long haul. Be assured that my answer tomorrow will be the same as today: Not only my heart but also my feet will remain at home in Cincinnati.
