CEAS Dean Named 2017 OSU GearLab Distinguished Alumnus

(CEAS) Dean Teik C. Lim, PhD, PE, Herman Schneider Professor of

Mechanical Engineering

, has been awarded the 2017 Gear and Power Transmission Research Laboratory (GearLab) Distinguished Alumnus Award by The Ohio State University for his significant academic achievements in the field of gearing and for his leadership in academia.

“It is quite an honor to be presented with this award. Nearly 30 years ago, I was a PhD student defending my dissertation on ‘Vibration Transmission through Rolling Element Bearings in Geared Rotor Systems,’ a topic which was the catalyst of my engineering passion in gearing research. As I continue on my path, I hope to foster that same desire for excellence in my students as it was instilled and ignited within me.”

Since joining the UC mechanical engineering faculty in 2002, Dean Lim has maintained a phenomenal record of success in both research and leadership. He has served as Department Head of Mechanical Engineering (formerly Department of Mechanical, Industrial & Nuclear Engineering) from 2005-11, and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research from 2011-12.

Named Dean of CEAS since 2012, his insight and drive have propelled the college on an upward trajectory towards excellence. The college boasts a

record-breaking total enrollment

of about 6,000 students, a steady growth in transformative

research

projects of more than $20M annually, and the addition of many new faculty members through the

“50-in-5” hiring initiative

.

Also at UC, Dean Lim successfully launched the

Cincinnati/Chongqing Joint Cooperative Institute

. As one of the college’s leading global partnerships, the alliance brought the first mandatory

cooperative education program

to China. The program is now its fourth year of operation with more than 350 students enrolled. In Fall 2017, JCI’s inaugural senior class will come to UC to finish out the fifth and final year of their program and will graduate in April 2018. Graduates of the JCI will receive degrees from both institutions.

Additionally, Dean Lim is the founding director of the

Hypoid and Bevel Gear Mesh and Dynamics consortium

since 1997, and

UC Simulation Center

, a UC /

Procter & Gamble

(P&G) Collaboratory, since 2008. The gear consortium is supported by numerous automotive and off-highway vehicle companies, and has been funded continuously for nearly 20 years. The UC Simulation Center annually employs more than 70 students to work on projects alongside engineers and scientists from P&G. The success earned the UC Simulation Center the prestigious Connect and Develop Private/Public Partnership Award from P&G in 2012, and has been replicated worldwide four times by P&G and Honda.

Prior to his UC career, Dean Lim worked in industry as a Project Engineer for the Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) Advanced Test and Analysis Group. He has also previously held the roles of Research Scientist at the OSU Center for Automotive Research and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama.

Dean Lim received his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, University of Missouri-Rolla and Ohio State University, respectively. He specializes in the following research areas: design and dynamics of precision machine elements (gears, bearings, drivelines, powertrain systems), gear noise/vibrations, structural vibrations and acoustics, active noise and vibration control, automotive NVH (noise, vibration & harshness) and product sound quality design, analysis and testing.

Dean Lim is a Fellow of ASME, SAE, and the UC Graduate School. He was elected the Order of the Engineer Fellowship in 2013 and received the Thomas French Alumni Award from the Ohio State University in 2010. He was also named Herman Schneider Professor of Mechanical Engineering in 2009, for his teaching and research accomplishments.
