College of Medicine Ranks High in Federal Research Funding

Six departments within the UC

College of Medicine

ranked in the top 15 in their category for federal research funding during FY 2002, according to rankings released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The

Department of Neurology

, chaired by Joseph Broderick, MD, ranked No. 10 among 72 departments nationally in federal research funding during FY 2002.  The No. 10 ranking, up from No. 31 in FY 2001 and No. 34 in FY 2000, places the UC Department of Neurology ahead of Cornell University (11), Case Western Reserve University (14), Stanford University (15), the University of Michigan (18), Baylor University (21), Yale University (25), Harvard University (49), and The Ohio State University (54).

"NIH grants are the most competitive type of research funding," said Michael Privitera, MD, vice chairman of the Department of Neurology.  "Applications are reviewed by groups of the nations best scientists, and only the best are funded."

The NIH awarded the UC Department of Neurology $9.82 million to cover 15 separate projects in FY 2002.

The 

Department of Surgery

, chaired by Jeffrey Matthews, MD, ranked No. 15 among 80 departments nationally in federal research funding during FY 2002, according to rankings released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  The No. 15 ranking, up from No. 28 in FY 2001 and No. 31 in FY 2000, places the UC Department of Surgery above The Ohio State University (17), Columbia University (20), Johns Hopkins University (26), Vanderbilt University (27), and Emory University (28).  

"This is an important indication that UC Surgeons is being recognized nationally," said Dr. Matthews.  "Our surgeons and researchers are really helping to shape the future of surgery and medicine.  We are poised with new recruits coming on board in July to jump even higher next year." 

The NIH awarded the UC Department of Surgery more than $4 million in FY 2002.

Four other departments within the UC College of Medicine ranked among the top 15 in their category: Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy (15/89), Environmental Health (4/54 similar departments), Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology (13/48), and Obstetrics and Gynecology (14/77).

As a whole, the UC College of Medicine is ranked 19th out of 73 public medical schools and 42nd out of 125 public and private medical schools combined.
