UC Announces Opening of Medical Screening Program in Portsmouth
In 1993, the U.S. Congress enacted Section 3162 of the Defense Authorization Act, which directed the Department of Energy (DOE) to initiate programs to evaluate the health of former DOE defense nuclear facility workers. That bill is the reason that a new medical screening program is opening in Portsmouth, Ohio.
A consortium led by Eula Bingham, PhD, professor emeritus, environmental health, at the UC Medical Center, and including the National Building & Construction Trades research arm, The Center to Protect Workers' Rights, Duke University, and Zenith Administrators, has been providing medical screening of former construction workers at the Oak Ridge Reservation since 1999. This consortium will begin to provide screening exams for former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (GDP) construction workers in January 2004.
The opening of the Outreach Office for the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant Construction Workers Medical Screening Program will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union #577 Hall at 1236 Gallia St. in Portsmouth, Ohio.
Former Portsmouth GDP construction workers may call 1-888-464-0009 for more information.
