Day-long Public Forum Offers Answers on Cancer Care and Research

A free open house on all aspects of cancer prevention, diagnosis, care and research will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 25, at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center.

The first event of its kind in the region to offer such a broad range of information to a lay audience, the UC Community Cancer Education Day, “Knowledge for Life,” will cover 16 different cancers, including childhood and uncommon cancers.

It will be hosted by UC Cancer Center and UC College of Medicine, in conjunction with University Hospital.

The event will be organized by cancer type, with particular emphasis on cancers of the colon, lung, breast and prostate. Physicians and scientists from UC College of Medicine will discuss their specialties and answer questions—publicly or one-on-one—and ongoing video presentations and exhibits will supplement each talk.

The major sessions will be Breast Cancer, 10–11 a.m.; Colorectal Cancer, noon–1 p.m.; Prostate Cancer, 2–3 p.m.; and Lung Cancer, 4–5 p.m.

The comprehensive program will cover causes and risk factors of each type of cancer discussed, including hereditary and environmental considerations, as well as possible prevention, screening recommendations, treatment and outcomes. Speakers will also provide firsthand information about the latest developments in cancer research.

The American Cancer Society estimates there will be nearly 1.4 million new cancer cases in the United States in 2005, nearly 60,000 in Ohio, 23,000 in Kentucky and 32,000 in Indiana.

“Cancer has become the most common cause of death in the United States, says event organizer William Barrett, MD, associate professor of radiation oncology at UC College of Medicine. “We’re anxious to minimize suffering and death associated with this disease in Greater Cincinnati.

“Education is a major weapon against cancer,” says Dr. Barrett, “and this conference, with its uniquely broad scope, will be a tremendous educational opportunity for all who attend.”
