Luncheon Generates Funding for Breast Cancer Research
The UC Cancer Center, a national leader researching the use of ultrasound for early detection of breast cancer, will host the sixth annual My Mother, My Daughter, Myself luncheon to generate funding for research and new technologies.
Chaired by Lucinda Heekin and Sally Lehman, both of Hyde Park, the luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., Sept. 14, at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Cincinnati.
The guest speaker will be Lillie Shockney, education and outreach director for Johns Hopkins Breast Center and a breast cancer survivor. A nationally recognized public speaker and a registered nurse, Shockney is co-founder and vice president of the nonprofit organization Mothers Supporting Daughters with Breast Cancer.
According to the National Cancer Institute, one in seven American women will develop breast cancer. Seventeen percent of new cancer cases in Ohio involve the breast.
UCs comprehensive cancer diagnosis, treatment and care center is home to one of only two high-risk breast cancer clinics in the Tristate providing early detection services, surveillance, access to education and inclusion in clinical trials. The clinic is also the only facility in the Tristate to offer ductal lavage, a minimally invasive method of detecting abnormal cells in breast tissue.
Recently, the UC Cancer Center welcomed two breast cancer experts: Jennifer Manders, MD, a surgical oncologist, and Ruth Lavigne, MD, a radiation oncologist. The staff of oncologists, surgeons, radiation specialists and pathologists also serve as faculty in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Last year, more than 750 people attended the luncheon, which raised $144,000 for breast cancer research. Corporate tables ($1,500) and individual tickets ($100) are available by contacting Rachel Whisner, UC Cancer Center development officer, at 513-558-8624.
