UC Hosts Colorectal Cancer Education Event
The University of Cincinnati (UC) Cancer Center will host Trauma to Triumph, a free educational event on colorectal cancer on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Vontz Center for Molecular Studies, Martin Luther King Boulevard and Eden Avenue.
Edward Leigh, a nationally known motivational speaker and cancer survivor, will describe how his life was changed and he gained strength from his experience with advanced colon cancer.
After the presentation, UC medical oncologist Malek Safa, MD, and surgical oncologist Syed Ahmad, MD, will discuss the latest colon cancer treatments and answer questions.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 147,000 people will be diagnosed with colon or rectal cancer in 2005, and about 38 percent will die from it.
When diagnosed early, colon cancer has a 90 percent cure rate. Research has shown that regular exercise, a healthy diet that includes vitamin D and avoiding cigarettes reduce the risk for the disease.
