Public Event Stresses Cancer Education and Awareness

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati (UC) will host its 2^nd annual Community Cancer Education Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 25, at Kingsgate Conference Center,

The free event is designed to provide the public with the latest information about preventing, detecting and treating all types of cancer.

“UC’s Cancer Education Day is for anyone whose life has been touched by cancer—whether that person is fighting a personal battle against the disease, providing care to a loved one or simply evaluating his or her risks,” explains William Barrett, MD, director of UC’s division of radiation oncology and event organizer.

“Our theme—Knowledge for Life!—is very appropriate,” he adds, “because the event gives people the information they need to make educated—and empowered—decisions about their cancer care and recovery.”

On the 1^st floor, attendees will be able to talk one-on-one with local cancer experts and take advantage of video presentations, question-and answer sessions and topical exhibit booths—covering such issues as nutrition and environmental carcinogens—throughout the day.

On the 2^nd floor will be interactive group discussions about the most prominent cancers: breast (10 a.m.); colon and rectal (11:30 a.m.), prostate (1 p.m.) and lung (2:30 p.m.). Led by a panel of physicians and researchers, these sessions will focus on the all aspects of the disease—including new research and survivorship issues.

“Our mission doesn’t stop at cancer care,” explains Dr. Barrett. “We’re also educators and scientists who view it as our responsibility to keep the people of Greater Cincinnati informed in the fight against cancer.”

According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.4 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2006. More than 61,000 of them will be from Ohio.

“Through education and cutting-edge research,” Dr. Barrett adds, “we’ll continue to raise the level of cancer care in our region and beyond.”

Cancer Education Day is made possible with support from University Hospital, Western Southern Life Insurance, Clear Channel Communications, the American Cancer Society, Astra Zeneca, Mentor Corporation, Boehringer Ingelheim, MedImmune, the Henry and Susan Lurie Fund for Cancer Education and Sanofi-Aventis.
