Stephen Strakowski Appointed UC Chair of Psychiatry

CINCINNATI—Stephen Strakowski, MD, has been appointed chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine.

 

The appointment is effective Nov. 1, pending approval by the UC Board of Trustees.

Strakowski has served as interim chair of the department since May 1, 2006. He has been a professor of psychiatry since 2000, with secondary appointments as professor of biomedical engineering and psychology. He is also a member of the neuroscience graduate program faculty.

“Dr. Strakowski has been a valuable member of the college for 15 years, and has done a tremendous job of leading the psychiatry department as interim chair,” said David Stern, MD, dean of the College of Medicine. “We’re fortunate to have him continue these responsibilities on a permanent basis.”

 

A graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Strakowski completed his residency training at McLean Hospital/Harvard University School of Medicine.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, he serves as attending clinical chief of psychiatry at University Hospital and as a consulting psychiatrist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.

Strakowski has served in numerous leadership positions for the department and college and in the psychiatric profession. An experienced researcher, Strakowski also serves as director of the Center for Imaging Research, a core facility for the College of Medicine, and is principal investigator of a large National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) center (P50) award.

He has served on several NIMH and VA federal grant review subcommittees and is a reviewer for most of the major psychiatric journals. He has received a number of awards, most notably the Gerald L. Klerman Award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association (NDMDA). He has been named among the “Best Doctors in America” for several years. He has nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications and a number of chapters, published abstracts and solicited reviews.
