Hoxworth Issues Emergency Appeal for Blood and Platelet Donors
CincinnatiHoxworth Blood Center has issued an emergency appeal for donors of all blood types, especially Type O, and platelet donors.
As of this morning, the communitys blood supply was down 378 units in type O+ and O- combined, which are the types in greatest demand at local hospitals (one unit equals one pint).
Reasons for the shortage include inclement weather resulting in below average collections and flu and other seasonal illnesses which have caused high deferral rates. Heavy usage at local hospitals is a contributing factor as well.
Hospitals and trauma centers can't function without Type O blood, the most common blood type. Approximately 44 percent of the population is either O+ or O- (38% O+ and 6% O-).
Inventory levels are dropping dramatically as demand for blood products has risen over the past week, says Ronald Sacher, MD,. director of Hoxworth. Were asking all individuals to donate at their earliest convenience as this situation is very serious.
You are urged to donate at one of Hoxworths nine neighborhood donor centers in
In times of shortages, walk-ins are always welcome or you can schedule an appointment by calling (513) 451-0910 or (800) 830-1091.
