UC Names Health Sciences Library After Local Physician

CINCINNATI—The University of Cincinnati (UC) Board of Trustees today approved the naming of the health sciences library on the UC Academic Health Center campus.

The new name—the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library—honors Donald Harrison, MD, a local cardiologist and former senior vice president and provost for health affairs at UC.

Harrison made a $1 million gift to UC in 2005 to support the renovation and expansion of the health sciences library in UC’s new Center for Academic and Research Excellence (CARE)/Crawley Building—a $107.3 million construction project currently under way on

Eden Avenue
.

“The library is a critical component of the educational, research and clinical care mission of the Academic Health Centersays Harrison. “It provides a service that is absolutely essential. It lies in the heart of our new building and in many ways acts like the lifeline for UC’s up-and-coming physicians, scientists and health professionals.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to be associated with such an important endeavor,” he adds.

Harrison served as the senior vice president and provost for health affairs and a professor of medicine at UC from 1986 to 2002. His professional experience includes 23 years at Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford University Hospital where he was chief of cardiology and the William G. Irwin Professor for 20 years.

Passionate about academic medicine, Harrison has edited eight books and published more than 580 articles on clinical and cardiovascular research. He serves on the board of several start-up medical devices and biotechnology companies.

The new library will extend 45,000 square feet over multiple floors and will include a computer lab, electronic classroom and study space. One of 14 units that make up the UC library system, the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library is expected to open late summer.
