Sakr Receives Distinctive Honor From Pharmacy Association

Adel Sakr, PhD, professor emeritus of industrial pharmacy and pharmaceutics in the University of Cincinnati (UC) James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy, has been awarded the 2011 Research Achievement Award for Manufacturing Science & Engineering by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). 

Sakr will be recognized at the AAPS annual meeting Oct. 23-27 in Washington, D.C.

"The award is among the highest conferred … and, as you might imagine, the competition is quite keen each year,” says Phillip Mayer, AAPS president. 

"I am very honored, as this represents my devotion to pharmacy research and is the first time UC has received the award,” says Sakr, whose numerable academic achievements include:

1. Over 160 manuscripts in highly regarded, refereed journals (presented/co-presented).
2. Over 500 presentations and workshops in over 30 countries worldwide.
3. Mentored more than 100 MS, PhD, postdoctoral fellows and visiting professors spanning the globe.  

In addition to his tenure at UC, Sakr is a distinguished chaired professor at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia and currently a chairman of the board trustee’s assistant at Future University in Egypt. His scientific work covers a broad range of topics including design and development of immediate and sustained release preparations, colonic drug targeting, microencapsulation and bioavailability. He initiated and directed the clinical pharmacy workshop series for the German hospital and clinical pharmacists at the universities of Ulm and Leipzig, and he founded the industrial pharmacy program at the universities of Assiut, King Saud and Cincinnati as well as founding the UC/P&G graduate distant learning program. 

To recognize his outstanding achievements at UC, in 2008 Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory declared May 30 (his retirement day from UC) as Adel Sakr Day in the city’s calendar.

Sakr received his bachelor of pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, a special diploma (Industrial Pharmacy) from the University of Alexandria and earned his PhD in industrial Pharmacy from the University of Strathclyde, Great Britain. He came to UC in 1985.

Prior to traveling to Washington to receive this award, Sakr will also—on Sept. 4, 2011, during the opening ceremony of the 2011 FIP Pharmacy World Congress in Hyderabad, India—become an FIP Fellow, a recognition bestowed by the Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique (FIP). The honor recognizes individual FIP members who have distinguished themselves in the pharmaceutical sciences or practice of pharmacy.
