Greer Glazer Appointed Dean of UC College of Nursing

CINCINNATI—Greer Glazer, PhD, dean and professor of nursing at the University of Massachusetts Boston, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, has been appointed dean of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing.

The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2012, pending UC Board of Trustees approval.

"The strength and rich history of UC’s College of Nursing no doubt contributed to our ability to recruit someone of Dr. Glazer’s caliber,” said Santa Ono, PhD, UC senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. "I’m confident that Dr. Glazer’s nursing, administrative and research expertise will be a great addition to the college and the university as a whole.”

Glazer graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Michigan in 1976 and received her master’s in nursing with a maternal/newborn focus from Case Western Reserve University in 1979. She received her PhD in nursing from Case Western in 1984. Glazer is also a Fulbright Scholar (in Israel, 1988) and a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow (2001-2004).

She has held the dean’s position at the University of Massachusetts since 2004 and has extensive clinical, teaching and research experience, conducting studies on domestic violence education, alcohol use during pregnancy and barriers to prenatal health care among African-American women.

Glazer’s administrative responsibilities in Massachusetts have included service or chairmanship on a number of committees, including the University Strategic Plan Implementation Design Team, the Chancellor’s Strategic Planning Taskforce, Academic and Enrollment Planning Subcommittee and the Provost Search Committee, among many others. From 2007 to 2008 Glazer chaired the Urban Health and Public Policy Research Cluster Workgroup.

Glazer replaces Cheryl Hoying, PhD, who has served as interim dean since Jan. 1, 2011, following the retirement of Andrea Lindell, PhD. Lindell served as dean of the College of Nursing from 1990 through 2010. Hoying will now return full time to her position as senior vice president of patient services at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Founded in 1889, UC’s College of Nursing offered one of the first baccalaureate programs in nursing in the United States, and received the first endowment given to a nursing program. Dr. Glazer will become UC’s 7^th nursing dean and 14^th senior leader of the college, which was led for its first 51 years by a superintendent or director. In 2002 the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited the college for a 10-year period, distinguishing it with 71 years of continuous accreditation.
