Rouan Named Chair of UC's Department of Internal Medicine

CINCINNATI—Gregory Rouan, MD, professor and Richard W. and Sue P. Vilter Chair of Internal Medicine, has been named the permanent chair of the department of internal medicine at the UC College of Medicine. This appointment was approved by the UC Board of Trustees and is effective Jan. 1, 2012.

Rouan has served as interim chair since June 1.

"I am very honored and most humbled to be asked to assume this important role,” he says. "I’m looking forward to furthering the exceptional accomplishments of the department, the UC College of Medicine and UC Health and will continue to support our tripartite mission of excellence in education, research and patient care.”

"Dr. Rouan has aptly displayed his keen leadership abilities while he has served as interim chair,” says Thomas Boat, MD, dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for health affairs. "It also is evident that he holds the trust and respect of the department faculty and staff. As someone who knows the College of Medicine and the department extensively, Dr. Rouan is a natural fit for this position and I know he will continue to be a consummate leader.”

Rouan is a 1980 alumnus of the UC College of Medicine and also completed postgraduate training at UC and UC Health University Hospital. He became a professor of internal medicine in 1995 and was named to the Vilter Chair in 1999.

In addition to numerous College of Medicine committee assignments and roles in many professional organizations, Rouan also has served as associate chair for educational affairs and director of Graduate Medicine Education Programs in internal medicine.

Rouan serves as one of five board members of the UC Healthcare System, the parent company governing UC Health. He also recently was named governor-elect of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians.

Rouan has won a number of awards for excellence, including the 2010 Courage to Teach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. He’s also been named a "Top Doc” in Cincinnati, and an education endowment recently was established in his name to support medical education in the department.
