UC Sigma Xi Chapter Honored, Plans Lecture and Banquet
The UC Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, has received two honors from the national nonprofit membership society of scientists and engineers.
UCs chapter received the Chapter of Excellence Award and the Chapter Distinguished Program Award. The two awards are the first bestowed on the UC Chapter of Sigma Xi since the chapters original charter in 1925.
The Chapter of Excellence Award recognizes exceptional overall chapter activity and innovative programming, especially efforts which address the four major issues at the foundation of the societys mission: honor in science and engineering, science education, science policy and the public understanding of science.
The Chapter Distinguished Program Award is given to chapters that have organized or hosted a single, outstanding program, especially one that is unique or has touched the lives of many. UC was honored for "The UC Sigma Xi 2011 Future Symposium, held in March 2011.
The 2011 Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award lecture and annual autumn banquet will be held Wednesday, Nov. 30. Kevin Shockley, PhD, an associate professor in the department of psychology, is the honoree and will deliver the lecture at 5:15 p.m. in the Richard E. Lindner Center auditorium, Room 405.
The lecture will be followed by the chapters fall banquet at the Faculty Club in the Lindner Center. A reception is at 6:15 p.m., followed by the banquet at 7. The program will include brief presentations by the three 2010 Sigma Xi graduate student awardees. Seating is limited to approximately 100 attendees.
