UC Medical Professionals Mobilizing to Assist Hurricane Sandy Victims
Two faculty members with UC's Department of Emergency Medicine have been deployed to assist with recovery and relief efforts from Hurricane Sandy.
Jason McMullan, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and UC Health emergency medicine physician, has been deployed with a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team to New York.
The convoy includes about 80 people, including physicians, paramedics, rescue and search specialists, structural engineers, four canines and their handlers and a full crew of logistics, planning, communications and technical support personnel. McMullan is also a member of the medical team for the Hamilton County Urban Search and Rescue Team and the Ohio Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue.
Edward "Mel Otten, MD, professor of emergency medicine and UC Health emergency medicine physician, has been deployed with a federal Medical Response Team to Maryland. Otten is chief medical officer of the KY-1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team and a team leader of the Hamilton County SWAT.
Both physicians have responded to previous disasters in Haiti, Japan and around the world as part of relief efforts.
