Lactation Room Open in MSB for Nursing Mothers

A lactation room in the Medical Sciences Building (MSB) is ready for use by nursing mothers to pump breast milk. Located on Level 1 near the central elevators, the room (MSB 1050) is available for UC staff and students in the colleges of medicine, allied health sciences, pharmacy and nursing.  

"We are happy to have this room open and available for new mothers,” says Wes Munzel, a planner in the Office of Planning + Design + Construction. He adds that additional lactation rooms are in the works, including one in University Hall on the medical campus. 

To access the MSB lactation room, check out a key from the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library circulation desk. The procedure will work like checking out a book: UC students and staff automatically have a library account but will need to activate their account upon the first use of the room. This can be done either in person at the library or online via the library’s website.

Checkout of the key will be for a maximum of two hours, and access will be limited to during library hours. If necessary, a signup system could be implemented.

There are two spaces in the room, separated by a curtain, so two people can use it independently (each with her own key). Each space features a comfortable chair, footrest and table. The room also features a sink and an additional table, which is adjustable in case the user prefers to stand.
