Mini-Medical College Starts Oct. 2

CINCINNATI—The annual UC Mini-Medical College, a window into the workings of modern medicine, will start Wednesday, Oct. 2, for interested students from all walks of life. 

The continuing education event offered by UC's Communiversity will be held over four Wednesday nights in October. Faculty from the College of Medicine will share expertise and insights on a range of topics, including cardiac imaging, brain emergencies, genetic testing and surgical reconstruction.

Three evenings of the program take place at the UC College of Medicine, and one event will be held at the UC Health Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care.

The 2013 schedule is as follows:

October 2 - Hosted at the UC College of Medicine

  • 6 - 6:30 p.m. — "Cardiac Arrhythmias: How to Prevent and Treat Them," presented by Mehran Attari, MD, associate professor of medicine.
  • 6:45pm - 7:15 p.m. — "Atrial Fibrillation Management,” presented by Alexandru Costea, MD, assistant professor of medicine.
  • 7:20 - 8 p.m. — "Cardiac Imaging in the 21st Century," presented by Robert O’Donnell Jr., MD, assistant professor of medicine.

October 9 - Hosted at the UC Health Daniel Drake Center

  • 6 - 7 p.m. — "Brain Emergencies,” presented by Opeolu Adeoye, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and neurosurgery.
  • 7 - 8 p.m. — "Robotic Exoskeletons and Rehabilitation,” presented by Paige Thomas, PT-MSR, outpatient therapy manager, Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care.

October 16 - Hosted at the UC College of Medicine

  • 6 - 7 p.m. — "An Introduction to the Technological Advancements that will Transform Healthcare,” presented by Debi Sampsel, DNP, UC College of Nursing chief officer of innovation and entrepreneurship & Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care director of research and innovation.
  • 7 - 8 p.m. — "Predictive Genetic Testing,” presented by Erin Mundt, director, UC Genetic Counseling Graduate Program.

October 23 - Hosted at the UC College of Medicine

  • 6 - 7 p.m.  — "Plastic Surgery Solutions for Facial Paralysis and Skin Cancer," presented by Ryan Collar, MD, assistant professor of otolaryngology-head & neck surgery.
  • 7 - 8 p.m.  — "Plastic Surgery – More than Just a Pretty Face,” presented by Minh-Doan Nguyen, MD, PhD, assistant professor of surgery.

Extended-release buprenorphine viable, safe during pregnancy

MedPage Today highlighted research led by the University of Cincinnati's John Winhusen published in JAMA Internal Medicine that found administering weekly injectable extended-release buprenorphine for treatment of opioid use disorder during pregnancy led to higher rates of abstinence from illicit opioids than buprenorphine given daily under the tongue.
