Symposium Showcases Occupational Health and Safety Research

Cincinnati—Scientists will discuss the latest occupational and environmental health research at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Education and Research Center’s 14th annual Pilot Research Project (PRP) Symposium Thursday, Oct. 10, and Friday, Oct. 11, 2013.

The symposium is free and open to public and will take place in the Auditorium, Room 103, of Procter Hall at the College of Nursing on the University of Cincinnati medical campus.

Led by Amit Bhattacharya, PhD, professor of environmental health, the Pilot Project Research Training Program is a part of the Education and Research Center in the UC College of Medicine’s Department of Environmental Health and seeks to increase the Tristate’s research capacity through collaboration with 12 universities and colleges.

The program aims to increase the research capacity of trainees and young investigators in occupational health and safety and offers financial support to doctoral students and junior faculty with promising research ideas. An additional aim is to encourage those in related disciplines at collaborating universities throughout the region to pursue occupational health and safety research.

During the conference, the previous year’s research award winners will present their results and 2013-2014 award winners will display poster presentations of their proposed work.

Wayne Sanderson, PhD, professor and chair of epidemiology in the College of Public Health at the University of Kentucky and director of the Central Appalachian Regional Education Research Center, will speak on the topic of "Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis–An Ancient Disease That Is Still Among Us” during a keynote address at 1 p.m. Oct. 10.  

Denise Smith, PhD, professor of health and exercise sciences at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and research scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, will give the keynote address at 8 a.m. Oct. 11 on "Sudden Cardiac Events: Why Are Firefighters at Risk?”
