UC Selects Michael Archdeacon, MD, as Chair of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine has selected Michael Archdeacon, MD, to chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Pending UC Board of Trustees approval, Archdeacon’s appointment is effective Nov. 1.

Archdeacon has served as interim chair since August when Peter Stern, MD, stepped down after 21 years as the department chair.

A professor of orthopaedic surgery and adjunct professor of biomedical engineering as well as the director of the division of musculoskeletal traumatology, Archdeacon will also hold the Peter J. Stern, MD, Endowed Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery.

"The appointment as chair is a natural next step for Dr. Archdeacon, who, over the past decade, has proven himself as a key leader in the department as well as at University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC)," says Thomas Boat, MD, Christian R. Holmes Professor, Dean of the College of Medicine and UC Vice President for Health Affairs.

Archdeacon has served as vice chair in the Department of Orthpaedic Surgery since 2007 and medical director since 2002. His leadership roles at UCMC include serving as chief of staff from 2008 to 2012, and currently he is the medical director for operative services.
 
A fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and an Executive Board member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), Archdeacon lectures nationally and internationally and has published extensively on orthopaedic trauma. He currently serves as the treasurer-elect of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society  (OOS) as well as a deputy editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

He has participated in many College of Medicine and UC Health committees and now serves as the physician lead for the Revenue Management Work Stream Team of UC Health Project E. He has been active in his community as a youth hockey coach and in his church as a member of the St. James the Greater finance committee for 10 years.

Archdeacon received his bachelor of science in engineering degree from Tulane University and his medical degree and a master of science in biomedical engineering degree from Ohio State University. He completed an internship and residency at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and fellowships in orthopaedic surgical research at Case Western and orthopaedic trauma at Florida Orthopaedic Institute at Tampa General Hospital.
