Medical Students Raise $900 for Typhoon Disaster Relief

The College of Medicine's Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA) raised $908 for Typhoon Haiyan disaster relief from its bake sale Nov. 18-21.

All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross – Philippine chapter.

APAMSA co-chair Karen Chao called the final total "phenomenal," adding "it really wouldn't be possible without the outpouring of generosity of funds, time, and effort (and amazing baked goods) we have received from fellow medical students, faculty and staff at UC. It warms my heart to see everyone rally behind a cause so readily; it really peaks to the caliber of our UC family."

"I would like to give a hearty thanks to everyone who made this huge sum possible, including Culinary Club members who went above and beyond with some of their culinary contributions, and my executive board who helped with planning and implementation of the bake sale," she said.

Typhoon Haiyan produced record-strength winds and storm surges when it hit the Philippine islands earlier in November.

According to the American Red Cross, approximately 10 million people across 40 provinces in the Philippines have been affected by the typhoon. As many as 600,000 have been displaced and the death toll continues to rise.

UC students organize free health clinic in community
