Students Shave for St. Baldrick's March 28
UC students will shave their heads in support of childhood cancer research during the annual St. Baldrick's Celebration, to be held at 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, at Molly Malone's pub in Covington, Ky.
Organized locally by the College of Medicine pediatrics club, St. Baldrick's Day (named for "St. Patricks Day" and "bald") events are held worldwide to raise money for childhood cancer research.
As of Monday, March 24, 33 students have committed to shaving their heads completely for the event, and ten students are donating eight to ten inches of their hair--and the club has more than $15,000 pledged in donations.
If the club raises $20,000, interim associate dean for medical education Bruce Giffin, PhD, has pledged to shave his mustache. Students will hold fundraisers throughout the week before Friday's event:
- Tuesday, March 25: From 4-8 p.m., 25 percent of proceeds at the Potbelly Restaurant on Calhoun Avenue will go to the St. Baldrick's fund.
- Wednesday, March 26: First and second-year medical students will play each other in a flag football game in the Sheakley Athletic Complex. Admission is $5.
- Thursday, March 27, and Friday, March 28: Organizers will hold a bake sale in the CARE/Crawley atrium.
