2014 Midwest Regional Brain Tumor Conference Highlights Research

CINCINNATI—The 2014 Midwest Regional Brain Tumor Conference, a free educational event for patients, caregivers and family members, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 21, at the Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road.

The annual conference, titled "Hope, Innovation, Progress, Support,” is presented by the Brain Tumor Center of the University of Cincinnati (UC) Neuroscience Institute, a joint initiative of UC Health and the UC College of Medicine. 

The event will offer patients free screenings for dizziness and risk of falls.

Topics at the conference will include navigating online resources, how tumors are diagnosed, dizziness and balance rehabilitation, new clinical trials, and clinical research with cooperative groups. Breakout sessions will focus on brain tumor types: glioma, acoustic neuroma, meningioma and pituitary adenoma. An additional breakout session will cover wellness.

Featured speakers and breakout session leaders include the following members of the UC faculty and UC Brain Tumor Center:

• John Breneman, MD, professor emeritus of radiation oncology and neurosurgery and associate director, UC Brain Tumor Center.

• Richard Curry, MD, assistant professor of hematology oncology and neurology.

• Mary Gaskill-Shipley, MD, professor of radiology.

• Matthew Hagen, MD, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine.

• Christopher McPherson, MD, associate professor and director of the division of surgical neuro-oncology.

• Luke Pater, MD, assistant professor of radiation oncology.

• Ravi Samy, MD, associate professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

• Patrick Shumrick, DPT, volunteer assistant clinical professor of otolaryngology.

• Ronald Warnick, MD, medical director of the UC Brain Tumor Center and the John M. Tew, Jr., MD, Chair in Neurosurgical Oncology.

• Lee Zimmer, MD, PhD, associate professor and director, Endoscopic Cranial Base Center, division of sinus surgery.
