Let s Go to the Movies

Faculty and residents in the College of Medicine are needed for an online discussion of doctor-patient communication techniques.  If you like movies, it’s a bonus.

The College of Medicine will offer its first online course to fourth-year medical students this fall which runs Oct. 30, 2014, through Jan. 30, 2015. The course is offered through the UC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Course directors are Rocky Ellis, MD, associate professor of family medicine; Bruce Giffin, PhD, interim associate dean for medical education, and Amy Thompson, MD, associate professor of obstetrics/gynecology. Students and faculty from across the College of Medicine will discuss doctor-patient communication as portrayed in popular movies.

All of the discussions will take place online. John Alberti, PhD, professor of English and director of cinema studies at Northern Kentucky University, will participate in discussions to point out important cinema techniques used in films. This course will involve resident and/or faculty participation for one week only and discussions will be held online.

The anticipated commitment is approximately four hours, including time to watch the assigned movie of the week. Faculty members are invited to participate for one week or several weeks based on their clinical background or love of movies. Interested faculty should email amy.thompson@uc.edu.

Some of the movies the class will discuss are: "The Doctor," starring William Hurt; "Wit," starring Emma Thompson; "50/50," starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anna Kendrick; "Lars and the Real Girl," starring Ryan Gosling; "Gifted Hands: the Ben Carson Story," starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Kimberly Elise; and "Philadelphia," starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington.
