Local Students Get Hands-On Experience at College of Nursing
Tristate participants in Delta GEMS and Delta Academy visited the UC College of Nursing on March 7 as part of their STEM career explorations. Nursing students and faculty introduced the students to high-fidelity patient simulators and telehealth robotics, providing them with a hands-on opportunity to check peripheral pulses, listen to heart sounds, use a bag-valve mask, practice chest compressions and check pupillary responses. The Delta GEMS also witnessed a simulated birth. In other sessions, students learned what it takes to become a nurse and had the opportunity to use iPads in a mini Genetics class.
The Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) program works to inspire African American at-risk adolescent girls aged 14 to 18 to succeed academically and become compassionate, caring and community-minded young women. Delta Academy strives to enrich and enhance the education of fifth- through ninth-grade girls, augmenting their scholarship in math, science and technology. Both are implemented by local chapters of the national Delta Sigma Theta social service sorority.
