Annual Symposium Showcases Occupational Health and Safety Research
CincinnatiScientists will discuss the latest occupational and environmental health research at the University of Cincinnati (UC) Education and Research Centers 16th annual Pilot Research Project (PRP) Symposium Thursday, Oct. 8, and Friday, Oct. 9, 2015.
The symposium is free and open to public and will take place in the Engineering Research Center Auditorium at the College of Engineering and Applied Science on the University of Cincinnati campus.
Led by Amit Bhattacharya, PhD, professor of environmental health, the Pilot Research Training Program is a part of the Education and Research Center in the Department of Environmental Health at the UC College of Medicine and seeks to increase the Tristates research capacity through collaboration with 12 universities and colleges.
The program aims to increase the research capacity of trainees and young investigators in occupational health and safety and offers financial support to doctoral students and junior faculty with promising research ideas. An additional aim is to encourage those in related disciplines at collaborating universities throughout the region to pursue occupational health and safety research.
During the conference, the previous years research award winners will present their results and 20152016 award winners will display poster presentations of their proposed work.
James Thompson, PhD, chief of the Hearing Loss Prevention Branch of the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research under the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), will speak on the topic of "Noise Control of Large Mining Machines during a keynote address at 1 p.m. Oct. 8.

UC is one of only 18 NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center programs in the United States. The center includes multiple specialty occupational safety and health program tracks at the graduate and occupational medicine residency levels.

Vic and Laura Troha wrote two children's books together, and this year, they are using the proceeds to buy Christmas gifts for Hamilton County foster kids. The couple are both graduates of the University of Cincinnati's College of Allied Health Sciences and met the day they graduated.
