Four COM Students Named Ryan Fellows for 2016-2017

Four graduate students have been awarded the Albert J. Ryan Fellowship, the top academic honor for graduate students pursing research in the College of Medicine’s doctoral programs. The University of Cincinnati is one of three schools to receive fellowship funding; the other two are Harvard Medical School and the Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth College.

Students are selected for performance in formal courses, research talent and accomplishment, and participation in the scientific community. Fellowship are two-year awards, and come with both an increase in stipend and an invitation to attend an annual symposium during which they have an opportunity to present their research to colleagues.  

This year’s fellows are:

  • Mark Althoff, Cancer and Cell Biology, and his advisor is Jose Cancelas, MD, PhD, director of research at Hoxworth Blood Center and professor of pediatrics. 
  • Kobina Essandoh, Molecular, Cellular and Biochemical Pharmacology, and his advisor is Guo-Chang Fan, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics. 
  • Hisako Fujiwara, Neuroscience, and her advisor is Jennifer Vannest, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics. 
  • David Milewski, Molecular and Developmental Biology, and his advisor is Tanya Kalin, MD, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics.

New combination treatment improves multiple myeloma outcomes
