Celebrating Women in Medicine Month: Lisa Kelly, MD

Dedicated to the recruitment, advancement and retention of all women faculty and trainees in the College of Medicine, the organization's overall goal is to advance the careers and leadership skills of WIMS members. This month the AMA and AAMC celebrate Women in Medicine Month or #WiMmonth. UC WIMS has selected a few College of Medicine faculty to profile during September and learn what motivates and inspires them.

What does a typical day for you look like?

One of the most exciting things about a career in medicine is that there is no typical day! Every day brings new and interesting experiences. I divide my time between teaching preclinical M1 M2 medical students at the UC College of Medicine and treating patients as an ophthalmologist at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. 

What is your favorite experience working in medicine?

I have two favorite aspects of medical practice. First, is the privilege of being invited into the lives of my patients and of earning their trust. My other favorite aspect of medical practice is the ability to work with bright and passionate students, and to watch them blossom into talented physicians. 

What is the most challenging issue you face and how to do you overcome it?/
What advice would you give aspiring physicians? 

To aspiring physicians I would say, all professions face challenges and medicine is no exception. However, the joys of medical practice and the opportunity to improve patients’ lives far exceeds the challenges that we encounter.
