Free Expo for Spinal Cord Injury Community at Drake Sept. 9
UC Health presents the third annual Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Expo on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care. This free event will offer networking opportunities for the SCI community, along with educational presentations from spine experts, booths from more than 30 services, resources and products.
Guest speaker will be four-time quad rugby national champion and paralympic gold medalist Mark Zupan. The author of Gimp: the Story Behind the Star of Murderball, Zupan will share how his life changed after an accident left him a quadriplegic at age 18.
Zupan will speak from 11 a.m. to noon.
Angela Stillwagon, DO, expo organizer and an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, says the event is not exclusively for those with spinal cord injury. "It may also be useful for people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis really anyone with significant mobility issues or functional impairments can attend, come and talk to our experts and see some of the products and services available.
"We want it to be a place where the community can come together and know were here to help themto make them aware of resources that are available in the region.
Stillwagon says that at Drake, experts also offer a monthly multidisciplinary clinic for patients with spinal cord injury. This includes a physician with expertise in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as UC urology, nursing staff and physical/occupational therapists.
Stillwagon says expo participants will range from wheelchair vendors to adaptive sports groups, both non- and for-profit organizations.
