Beck and Espay Honored With 2018 Excellence in Mentoring Award

Andrew Beck, MD, and Alberto Espay, MD, are recipients of the College of Medicine’s "2018 Excellence in Mentoring Award,” an honor presented for the second year and designed by the college’s Office of Student Affairs and Admissions to recognize faculty who are outstanding mentors to medical students.

Beck, an associate professor of pediatrics at UC, is also an attending physician at Cincinnati Children’s. He strives to improve population health outcomes by focusing on the identification and mitigation of key social, economic and environmental determinants of health. Beck sees patients as a primary care and hospitalist pediatrician.  The award selection committee noted his dedication to teaching medical students, both formally and informally, and to actively supporting his mentees in their projects and career paths.

"Dr. Beck is committed to supporting students in their exploration of community health and is a phenomenal advocate for students as they learn to care for patients and the conditions in which they live, work, learn and play,” wrote one student who nominated Beck for the mentorship award.

Espay is the director, professor and endowed chair of the UC James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders. His research efforts have focused on the measurement of motor and behavioral phenomena in, and clinical trials for, Parkinson disease as well as in the understanding and management of functional movement disorders. The award selection committee noted his commitment to mentoring medical students in research, helping them to network within the field of neurology, and providing guidance about residency programs. 

"Dr. Espay has given me some of the best compliments I have ever had, and the best criticisms as well,” wrote one student nominator. "My experience at the UC College of Medicine and my career is forever changed because of Dr. Espay.”

Posters displaying Beck and Espay and their mentorship awards are on display in front of the UC College of Medicine Office of Student Affairs and Admissions.  They will be presented with their awards at the 2018 Student Clinician Ceremony on June 28.
