Patient Completes Appalachian Trail After AAA Repair

In 1965, Kenneth Bordwell started what became a lifelong quest to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, a 2,180 mile trek through the wilderness that passes through 14 states between Georgia and Maine. He thought that dream was dashed when at age 67 and about 100 miles shy of his goal he was diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a life-threatening weakness in the wall of the aorta, the body s primary artery and source of blood flow.

Atsuo Sasaki, PhD, joined the UC College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine s hematology oncology faculty in July to lead innovative research for brain metastasis. He fills a critical role within the UC Brain Tumor Molecular Therapeutics Program, a unique translational research partnership launched in 2011 by the University of Cincinnati Neuroscience Institute and University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute.

Which specific bacteria contribute to these problems, however, has been unknown making it difficult for public health officials to develop tools to effectively address the underlying source of the problem.
