Cincinnati’s poet laureate to visit UC Clermont
Visit part of college’s Poetry Series and International Education Week
Cincinnati poet laureate Manuel Iris will visit UC Clermont Nov. 7.
The UC Clermont 2018-19 Poetry Series will welcome its second of four authors to the college’s Batavia campus Nov. 7. UC alumnus Manuel Iris is Cincinnati’s second poet laureate and author of “Translating Silence” (Artepoetica Press, 2018). The event is part of a larger two-day celebration of International Education Week at the college, Nov. 7-8.
“The UC Clermont Poetry Series has been bringing local and national poets to the college for more than 10 years but we’ve never had a Poet Laureate before,” said Phoebe Reeves, associate professor of English. “We’re excited to have Cincinnati Poet Laureate and acclaimed Mexican poet Manuel Iris joining us for this event, where he will be reading and discussing his bilingual poems and the importance of poetry in our local communities.”
Iris will be on hand on Nov. 7 for a Q&A with the author and writing workshop at 10:10 a.m. in the Student Services building, room 240, followed by a reading, book signing and reception at 2:30 p.m. in the UC Clermont Park National Bank Art Gallery.
Other International Education events include an exhibit by artist Ivan Ivanov, a Bulgarian painter and designer whose work will be on display in the gallery, with a reception held Nov. 7, 3:30-4:30. On Nov. 8, language and poetry students will present at an International Poetry Reading at 9:30 a.m., and the film “Slumdog Millionaire” will be shown at 12:30 p.m., both in Snyder room 142. Various pop-up activities will be taking place around campus as well.
