CCM Philharmonia continues concert series on Feb. 1
Aik Khai Pung conducts the CCM Philharmonia in a concert of works by Weber, Blacher and Tchaikovsky
The University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music Philarmonia continues its 2018-19 concert series at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 in Corbett Auditorium. Tickets to the performance are on sale now.
Led by interim music director and conductor Aik Khai Pung, the concert begins with Carl Maria von Weber's Overture to Euryanthe, a dramatic opera composed in 1823. NPR has praised the opera for its "brilliant" score and suggests that it may be Weber's greatest masterpiece.
Next on the program is Boris Blacher's highly rhythmic Orchestral Variations on a Theme by Paganini, which was first performed in 1947 and is described as the composer's most successful orchestral work.
The concert closes with Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's final completed symphony, Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 73, “Pathétique” — a piece that the composer described as "the best thing I ever composed or shall compose."
