On Apr. 17, the University of Cincinnati honored Richard (Rich) Miller, Ph.D., with the Faculty Senate Award for Exemplary Contributions in Service. The award recognizes two faculty who have made “significant and sustained service contributions to the University during their career at UC.”
“Service is one area where you typically don’t get any recognition, but it’s necessary,” says Miller. “Service gives you a chance to have a voice at the table.”
Miller, professor and associate head of the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management, has served on a number of department- and college-level committees, ranging from curriculum to accreditation to governance. He has also served on 15 university-level committees, including three faculty senate committees. He has held positions such as faculty senate chair and interim vice provost for academic affairs.
Speaking of his involvement in so many committees, Miller says, “There are times it gets a little overwhelming, but it pays off when you can go in and actually influence things in a positive way.”
“Rich is always eager and willing to help develop school initiatives and is especially helpful in giving me insight concerning faculty issues,” said Paul Orkwis, PhD, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS). “He has positively impacted CEAS for the past two and one half decades and is most deserving of this award.”
Miller projects just as much passion to his teaching and research. Miller has devoted his career to making concrete structures, specifically bridges, safe for civilians. His work has influenced changes for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials bridge design specifications and the Ohio Department of Transportation specifications, both of which cover the design, evaluation and rehabilitation of highway bridges.
Miller’s numerous awards for teaching and research include CEAS Distinguished Researcher, CEAS Master Educator and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute Elected Fellow.
Sarah Mullins, a teacher’s assistant for Miller’s Statics and Basic Strengths of Materials class, spoke of her work with him: “Professor Miller is approachable, objective, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He pushes his students to understand concepts and takes command in his field of expertise. He clearly loves what he does.”
Miller joined UC in 1988. For 30 years, Miller’s dedication to service has helped unite the college and university.
