UCPD officers recognized for lifesaving work
On Feb. 5, University of Cincinnati Police Officers Laura Hutchings and Kennerly Newlin responded to the Lindner College of Business for a report of a student suffering from a seizure.
When the officers arrived, the student was unconscious, bleeding from a head injury and no longer breathing. Officers Hutchings and Newlin immediately began lifesaving measures, including CPR and an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The student was then quickly transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
“The actions of Officers Newlin and Hutchings saved this young man's life. Early high-quality CPR is the most important thing for survival in cardiac arrest. Because of these officer's recognition and quick action, this young man was able to walk out of the hospital alive. They are truly heroes,” Dr. Joshua Gauger said. Dr. Gauger, an emergency medicine resident physician, took care of the student, along with Dr. Lori Stolz, attending emergency physician.
After a week-long stay at the medical center, the student is expected to fully recover.
“We are very proud to recognize Officers Hutchings and Newlin for their efficient actions responding to save a student’s life. Officer Newlin, who has been with UCPD since 2015, is an impressive and dedicated officer, and Officer Hutchings, one of our newest hires, has already made her mark on the division,” said UCPD Chief Maris Herold.
Officers Hutchings and Newlin were recognized during a ceremony on Feb. 28, where they were presented with commendations and a Lifesaving Award.
