The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 marked the end of World War I. The United States would go on to celebrate Armistice Day for decades before changing the name to Veterans Day. Instead of celebrating the end of a war, we now celebrate the soldiers who fought for peace in all wars, past and present.
The University of Cincinnati held its annual Veterans Day observance ceremony on Friday, Aug. 8. The UC Marching Band paid tribute by playing the song of each branch of the military, and veterans from each branch were invited to stand and be recognized as their branch's song played.
UC President Neville Pinto quoted a Veterans Day speech made by the late U.S. President Ronald Reagan, who once said that "all we can do is remember" veterans because "what they gave us is beyond the power to repay."
"Today, that is the humble gift we extend to them: We remember them and their selfless service to hte cause of freedom," Pinto said. "May we salute them not just today, but also throughout the year, with our compassion, our kindness, our respect and our gratitude for the sacrifice they made to benefit us all."
