CCM offers Music Theory Prep class for college-bound students

Students can prepare for their music theory diagnostic or placement test in CCM Prep’s online course

UC College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory and Community Engagement (CCM Prep) offers an online course to help students prepare for their music theory college placement exams.

Taught by Ellen Harrison, an award-winning composer and the head of CCM Prep's Music Theory program, the Take Note: Music Theory Prep course covers the basics of music theory that include understanding:

  • Intervals (harmonic, melodic and inversions)
  • Scales (major, the various minors, diatonic modes)
  • Key signatures
  • Triads and inversions
  • Basic Roman numeral and figured bass
  • Simple bar line placement and meter exercises
  • Aural skills: recognition of melodic and harmonic intervals, diatonic pitch patterns and melodic dictations.

The Take Note: Music Theory Prep course is open to students ages 16 and up. Classes begin on July 20, 2020, and continue through August 5, 2020. The online class is offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There are 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. class sections; once a class section reaches capacity, students can still register via the waitlist and CCM Prep will open additional sections.

CCM Prep offers a variety of online summer arts experiences including piano classes, a two-week workshop with the New Horizons Orchestra, online drop-in ballet classes and private lessons. View CCM Prep’s summer 2020 class offerings.
