WCPO: Ohio board considers standards for police during mass protests
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered an Ohio board to set new standards for law enforcement agencies to follow during mass protests like the ones in Cincinnati last spring, reports WCPO. In examining the issue, WCPO turned to University of Cincinnati criminologist Robin Engel, a nationally renowned expert on policing policy, for a more robust look at the scope and kind of recommendations the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board are considering.
Engel, a criminal justice professor in UC’s School of Criminal Justice, is one of 12 community and criminal justice leaders from across the state to serve on the board. Since 2015, the board has set standards for hundreds of agencies when it comes to use of force and police accountability, reports WCPO.
“We will hear from community members, members that have been involved in protests. We’ll hear from law enforcement experts,” Engel said.
