LA Times: Opera singer turns pandemic job loss into TV gold on 'The Voice'

CCM Voice alumnus John Holiday shares his astonishing range on the nationally televised competition

The Los Angeles Times featured UC College-Conservatory of Music alumnus John Holiday (MM Voice, '12) for turning pandemic hardships and job loss into "TV gold" on NBC's The Voice.

In order for Holiday to remain on the show, viewers must vote for him during the show's voting windows on December 7 and December 14. Votes can be submitted online and through The Voice's official app. Holiday shared a special video to encourage his CCM family to continue to support him in the competition.

"Whether he's turning chairs with otherworldly high notes or channeling his inner Céline Dion in rehearsals with Usher and John Legend, Holiday comes across on reality TV as he does in real life: an ambitious artist with a tender heart, exceptional talent and a mission to bring joy and hope to the world through his music," writes LA Times writer Catherine Womack.

Holiday has impressed judges and viewers alike throughout Season 19 of the national singing competition. The countertenor most recently performed Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon" during the competition's "playoff" live performances on November 30.

During the "knockout" round of The Voice, he gave an epic performance of "All By Myself" — competing against Cami Clune's "I Put a Spell on You." Watch their performances below; Holiday's performance begins at 2:10.

Billboard magazine previously complimented the countertenor with "astonishing range," after Holiday competed against Ohio-native Julia Cooper in singing Stevie Wonder's "Summer Soft" during the show's "battle rounds." Watch their performance online.

"John is just so remarkable," Legend said of the CCM alumnus. "He's just one of those talents that don't come along very often. We haven't seen someone with his immense gift on this show, and I had to pick him."

Legend was first drawn to Holiday's voice during the premiere of Season 19 of The Voice, which aired on October 19. The Cincinnati Enquirer featured this local connection in the hit show, writing that Holiday's blind audition "stuns" the competition judges.

The Voice judges John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Gwen Stefani wanted to coach Holiday during this year's competition, but Legend used his only block of the season to keep Clarkson from adding Holiday to her team. Ultimately, Holiday chose to be a member of Team Legend.

With a background in opera, Holiday is a countertenor with an impressive vocal range and often sang in the soprano section of his church choir. He displayed his vocal chops by singing Ella Fitzgerald's "Misty" during his blind audition on The Voice.

Holiday told the judges that he is trying to inspire the next generation of opera singers. He was recently featured in OperaWire's list of 30 most influential LGBTQIA+ players in opera as a fast-rising singer to watch and as an outspoken advocate of the LGBT community.
