Glenn Wegryn fourth fellow from Lindner College of Business

Glenn Wegryn, executive director for the Center for Business Analytics at the University of Cincinnati’s Carl H. Wegryn will be inducted at the Virtual 2020 INFORMS Annual Meeting in November, along with his class of 11 other fellows from as near as Ann Arbor to as far as Rio de Janeiro and Hong Kong.

“Glenn’s prestigious recognition as an INFORMS Fellow proves that empowering business problem-solving happens not only in our classrooms but through the work our centers do through partnerships around the world,” said Marianne Lewis, PhD, dean and professor of management at Lindner. “Congratulations to Glenn on his latest achievement and continued success leading our Center for Business Analytics.”

Established in 2002, the INFORMS fellowship program acknowledges operations research and management science professionals with outstanding lifetime achievements. In addition to being a long-time member of INFORMS, fellowship candidates are evaluated across five categories:

  1. Education: Activities that have helped grow OR/MS instruction.
  2. Service: Significant and sustained contributions that have advanced the stature or recognition of the OR/MS profession.
  3. Management: significant responsibility for the development and application of OR/MS techniques and knowledge within an organization over an extended period of time.
  4. Research: theoretical, empirical, or computational innovations in OR/MS.
  5. Practice: substantial application of OR/MS to significant practical problems.

Wegryn’s diverse professional experiences made him an exceptionally strong candidate for the 2020 class of fellows.

“INFORMS has recently been recognizing those who have contributed to the profession through their industry experience more and more, and I believe that weighed on my nomination,” said Wegryn, who is an INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional, a past president of the INFORMS Analytics Section and a 10-year veteran of the INFORMS Business Roundtable. “I look forward to this new chapter in my involvement with INFORMS where I can contribute to the organization that is such a great partner to the Center and help advance the profession.”

Wegryn’s fellowship continues a rich legacy of Lindner-affiliated INFORMS fellows:

  • Former Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems (OBAIS) Professor Jeff Camm, PhD (2017).
  • OBAIS Professor Emeritus David Kelton, PhD (2007).
  • OBAIS Professor Emeritus and Ohio Eminent Scholar Michael Magazine, PhD (2005).

Camm, along with the Business Analytics Center Academic Director and OBAIS Professor Mike Fry, PhD, was instrumental in putting together the nomination bid in spring 2020.

“I have known and worked with Glenn for over 25 years,” said Camm, who served as the Joseph S. Stern Professor of Business Analytics at Lindner from 1984 to 2015 before his current role as associate dean of business analytics and Inmar President Chair of business analytics at Wake Forest University School of Business. “Strong ties between industry and academia are critical to the analytics profession, and Glenn has made impressive contributions to this from both sides.”

Before joining the Lindner Center for Business Analytics as executive director in 2015, Wegryn spent more than 28 years at Procter & Gamble, notably creating and leading P&G’s award-winning Supply Chain Analytics group. The group’s work was recognized by INFORMS as a finalist for the Franz Edelman Award in 1996—coincidentally when Wegryn first connected with Camm and other OBAIS professors and leaders from Lindner to collaborate on future projects.

Glenn is an exceptional resource and role model for our students for learning how to create actionable insights from analytics models.”

Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly advancing and soon will be ubiquitous in everyday life, making us more productive and helping to solve complex problems while simultaneously creating new legal and ethical issues, a University of Cincinnati professor said. Jeffrey Shaffer, the Joseph S. Stern Professor of Practice and assistant professor-educator in UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business, sees AI as a tool that will transform lives, perhaps even more so than the internet did. He’s given presentations on AI and will teach a class about it in the fall, embracing the evolving technology in his life and in the classroom.
