Meet UC Law’s MLS director, speaker at upcoming AI conference
The University of Cincinnati College of Law launched a new online Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program this year, led by Susan Hayes Stephan, Director of the program. In this role, Hayes is responsible for substantial aspects of the law school’s online legal master’s program, including curriculum implementation and the teaching and learning process.
Stephan has been involved in the legal master’s community for several years, including her leadership role on the planning committee all five annual legal masters’ conference, including the most recent 5th annual Legal Master’s Conferences which took place March 10-11. Stephan is a frequent presenter on legal masters’ topics, and at this year’s conference, she moderated a deans’ panel discussing the role of legal master’s programs as part of law schools’ strategic planning.

Stephan will also present a session at the “Artificial Intelligence and the Law” Symposium at NKU Salmon P. Chase College of Law on March 25, discussing her forthcoming article entitled, “The Evolution of Influence: Regulating AI-Based Market Power in Online Behavioral Advertising.” In addition, her article, “Whither Free Will: The Biopolitical Imperative of Regulating Online Behavioral Advertising,” will be published in The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Global Studies later this year.
Stephan brings significant experience to UC in support of the MLS program both as an administrator and an educator. This fall, Stephan will teach a Privacy & Cybersecurity Law course for the MLS students, and she will teach Law and Regulation of Blockchain Technology in the spring, as part of a collaborative UC certificate in blockchain technology. She has taught in legal education since 2001 in areas including antitrust, intellectual property, federal privacy, information security, cyberlaw, administrative law, alternative dispute resolution, and law and economics. Prior to her law school experience, Stephan practiced law beginning in 1992, with a focus on legal challenges contract, technology, and employment issues on behalf of individual and business clients.
Stephan holds a master of Laws (LL.M.) in IT Law from the University of Edinburgh, a juris doctor (JD) from the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, a master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from New York University, a bachelor of Science from Northwestern University, and a certificate in Online Distance Education from the University of Minnesota.
