Interim Dean Gordon Gillespie chosen as fellow for the NLN's Academy of Nursing Education

UC College of Nursing Interim Dean Gordon Gillespie, PhD, is one of 20 distinguished nurse educators selected for the 16th class of fellows to be inducted into the prestigious Academy of Nursing Education by the National League for Nursing (NLN).

Gillespie’s work focuses on creating respectful and inclusive environments in both educational and practice settings. His program of research explores workplace violence against health care workers, specifically bullying against or witnessed by nursing students. Gillespie has led the charge in creating sustainable curricula and learning activities to make relevant content accessible to nurse educators. Further, he has designed widely adopted action plans that provide practicing nurses in emergency departments and other health care areas with the tools, skills and resources to respond to and manage workplace violence.

In addition, Gillespie has been a staunch advocate for creating inclusive environments within schools of nursing. His approaches to diversity, equity and inclusion have been instrumental in creating welcoming environments for all nursing students and have led to UC College of Nursing’s recognitions as an American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN) Best College for Men in Nursing for three years. His work has been attuned to important societal events, responded to the current generation of students and reflected a commitment to the social mission of nursing education.

Nationally, Gillespie’s work has been instrumental in changing the culture for male and diverse nursing students. Internationally, the impact of his work is seen in the creation of safe environments for practicing nurses and other health care workers.

“With threats to global health on the rise and the social determinants of health creating ever greater obstacles to health care equity, we applaud these leading nurse educator-scholars for their role in supporting and facilitating excellence in nursing education and serving as role models to their students and peer educators alike,” says NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD.

The induction ceremony will take place prior to the closing Gala at this year’s NLN Education Summit on Sept. 30 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
